Valerie,

The move from Java to Ruby has gone well. They say the best way to learn a foreign language is through "immersion," i.e. going to a country where they speak that language and completely immersing yourself in that language and culture. What can I say, I had done a little bit of Ruby before starting the job where I work now, but I *really* learned Ruby through total immersion. I was a little freaked out for about a month :) but just like any code I've written, I look back on what I did a year ago and wonder "what was I thinking?" and see how far I've come.

I came across something else in relation to sort_by, when sorting by multiple fields. Syntax is a little different. You use an array of fields by which you want to sort.

>> fishes.sort_by do |a|
>> [a.age, a.species, a.type]
>> end

It's nice because there's none of that awkward storing of the result (-1, 0, 1) and then remembering to only do your subsequent comparisons if the result is still 0

Hi Gayle

I'm a Java developer in the UK. Stumbed across your site. Would be interested to hear how your move from Java to Ruby went.

regards
